After a distinguished 22-year career a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of New York, Judge Scheindlin became of counsel to the New York law firm of Stroock, Stroock & Lavan LLP and a member of the JAMS arbitration panel. During her tenure on the bench, she authored many significant eDiscovery opinions including Zubulake v. UBS Warburg LLC and Pension Committee of the University of Montreal v. Banc of America Securities, LLC. She has been an Adjunct Professor at the Brooklyn Law School and Cardozo School of Law, and has served in numerous government and public service positions including Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York from 1977-1981, General Counsel to New York City’s Department of Investigation from 1981-82, U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of New York from 1982-1986, member of the Civil Justice Reform Act Advisory Group, Southern District of New York, from 1996-2000, and member of the Judicial Conference of the United States Advisory Committee on Rules of Civil Procedure from 1998 to 2006, where she was actively involved in drafting the 2006 eDiscovery amendments to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Judge Scheindlin is an Observer to The Sedona Conference Working Group 1 on Electronic Document Retention and Production and serves on The Sedona Conference Advisory Board. She is co-author, together with The Sedona Conference, of the first casebook on e-discovery (now in its third edition) and the West Nutshell on the same subject (now in its second edition). She frequently writes and lectures on e-discovery and related topics.
