WG1 Virtual Town Hall -- Discovery Under the Hood, Part I: Why Do We Get So Attached To Hyperlinked Documents?

Date:
Thursday, March 20, 2025 - 3:00pm to 4:30pm

Location: Online (Zoom), time listed is EDT

Beyond the debate over how to address hyperlinks and hyperlinked documents in discovery lies the technical realities that impact the preservation, collection, and production of hyperlinked content. Disputes in recent years have highlighted the importance of better understanding the shifting capabilities and limitations of platforms like Microsoft Purview and Google Vault, as well as the discovery challenges presented by hyperlinked content when moving from theory to practice.

In this first of a series of “Under the Hood” virtual town hall sessions, our dialogue leaders will set the table for a robust discussion of some of the technical complexities of collecting, analyzing, and reviewing hyperlinked documents in real-world scenarios. Planned discussion topics include:

  • How Microsoft Purview and Google Vault tackle identifying, preserving, collecting, and exporting hyperlinked content, including versions of the content.
  • Settings in Microsoft Purview and Google Vault that can affect the ability of an organization to preserve and collect hyperlinked content from custodial and non-custodial data sources.
  • Impact of including hyperlinked content on the typical collection time for custodial data in M365 or Google Workspace.
  • Identifying or branding hyperlinked content in productions.
  • Challenges presented by evolving features and capabilities in Microsoft Purview and Google Vault.
  • Addressing hyperlinked content outside of M365 and Google Vault platforms.

The Town Hall will begin with an overview discussion among our dialogue leaders. Participants will then have an opportunity to discuss and brainstorm on the topic. Takeaways and action items will be noted and shared with all to inform the ongoing mission of WG1 and guide its future publication projects.

Participation is free to all current Working Group Series members, but advance registration is required. Registrants will receive a Zoom invitation and instructions two days before the event.
